There is one future possibility :  brain to machine transfer.
What if we are able to transfer the entire content/"state"
of our brains to 
some artificial medium. We could do requent "back-ups" , so if 
for some reason your brain should get damaged somehow, there
would still be a back-up "copy". It would of course be missing the 
"data" between the last back-up and the "back-up"'s activation.
