Lima - Archeologists found six frozen mummies of people sacrified to Inca
gods more than 500 years ago.
The well-preserved mummies were in two graves on a snow-capped volcano in
Peru's southern Andes.
They had been buried with ceremonial pots, and gold and silver statues.
Grave goods included cloth blankets burned by volcanic ash, Peruvian
archeologist Ruth Salas said yesterday.
The find was made in mid-September near the crater of the 580-meter El
Misti volcano, 750 kilometers southeast of Lima.
"This is an important find because it shows El Misti is the mountain with
the greatest number of human offerings in the world," said Salas.
The Inca empire covered most of the Andes along South American's western
coast before the Spanish arrived in the 16'th century.
Many mummies from Peru's preColumbian cultures have been found, but few
have been frozen. Frozen mummies are better preserved and can reveal more
information, scientists say.
