X-Message-Number: 11142 From: Thomas Donaldson <> Subject: More on cryonics in Australia Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 21:53:01 +1100 (EST) Hi Charles! As I understand the current situation, we have equipment but not the latest. We're currently raising money to upgrade our capability. You might send an email to Joe Allen, at for a statement of the exact situation. As you may recall, Joe Allen recently went to Alcor for training. I am no longer in such close touch with the Australian group as I was once, but expect to become so. If my memory serves me correctly, there are now about 10 people signed up in Australia. The Cryonics Association of Australia (CAA) admits anyone who is signed up with an existing cryonics society --- as you can guess, we are too small to get involved in internecine struggles. Alcor does demand that its equipment be used only on Alcor members, but the second person suspended was an Alcor member. We would try to get special permission otherwise. (The first person suspended was not an Alcor member but a member of the Cryonics Institute, and he went to the US in very poor health to be suspended there). I'm happy to tell you of our progress in upgrading our preparations. At one time, when I was President of CAA, and it was based in Canberra (this was of course before I returned to the US) we were fully set up to do a preliminary perfusion and ship the patient to the US in ice, in a special container which would pass US customs. The procedures then (1985 was the year I left) were not as advanced as those now. (International shipping of a cryonics patient is NOT simple --- working out just how to do so was one of the main things I did). Since Joe has just come back from his training, he'll be able to tell you just what he can do and just what is needed to upgrade ourselves. And since he's been here longer than I have, and is closer to the current center of cryonics (now in Melbourne) he will also be able to give you better figures on membership, too. Best and long long life, Thomas Donaldson Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=11142
