d:  i just finished reading a biography of another zen master who, not knowing
how to swim, fell into a deep pool of water and only narrowly missed drowning
before being rescued by a couple of his students.  afterwards he said that
while trying to walk on the bottom of the stream he realized, with great
surprise, just how firmly he was still attached to breathing.
