X-Message-Number: 11770 From: Daniel Ust <> Subject: On one of Broderick's criticisms of Nord Date: Mon, 17 May 1999 09:38:59 -0400 On Fri, 14 May 1999 11:31:56 +0000 Damien Broderick <>: >By the way, the fact that your site is in Europe rather than the USA >(or the UK or even Australia) is irrelevant, unless it's only in Swedish; >the net is global, but still very heavily American in its reach and use. >We ignore these demographics at our perils. That may be so, BUT when I looked in Yahoo, I did not find Nord's page among the sits matches for cryonics. Nor did I find his page among the first 20 (of 1410) page matches. However, when I searched on "cryonics Sweden," I found his site listed in the top 20 (of 78) matches. Ergo, I think the odds of a Christian who doesn't have a sense of humor (in other words, probably an American - since I've noticed Americans tend to be the ones who get flustered over any little joke; must be all the political correctness here), yet who would sign up with cryonics were it not for Nord's tag line running into his page are small. (I think it's more likely for an orthodox Objectivist to run into my web pages. See below.:) And again, the question needs to be asked: Does anyone have any data on how best to market cryonics? If Nord changed that line about Jesus, would one more person join the movement? Would thousands of Christians suddenly drop their Bibles and sign up for suspension arrangements? Or would nothing really change? I bet the last, but I confess to not having any market studies to back my claim. Now, I don't want to appear as Nord's apologist. I do agree with much else of Broderick's post - e.g., that Nord was use an ad hom. argument in his responses, etc. Cheers!
