A few short comments on Steve Harris' proposal:
My main problem with asking younger members who have recently joined to
pay MORE than older members who have been members for some time is that
high fees will probably put these people OFF joining up. Among other
points, most of us earn more money as we get older.

Yes, I know that Steve discussed this problem. I didn't find his discussion
all that convincing. Certainly many people try hard not to think abut their
own death. But most people also have some ability to look into the future,
too, and therefore see that the amounts they pay for their first year as
members are way below those they'd pay for the next years (if Steve's
proposal were adopted).

One reason Steve may have formulated his proposal this way, of course,
is that he wants to avoid any appearance of insurance. It would help this
discussion a GREAT deal if someone who knows the regulations were to tell
us what defects the other proposals contain. After all, I don't see how
requiring a recent medical exam (with proof of good health) gets into
insurance issues at all. You need good health to be an astronaut, too,
and no one has raised insurance issues about astronauts --- not to mention
commercial jet pilots, policemen, and other occupations which require
good health to be hired.
				Best and long life.
