        HEALTH
WYDEN SAYS HE WILL FILIBUSTER ASSISTED SUICIDE PROPOSAL

A day after a House Judiciary subcommittee approved legislation
that would effectively block implementation of Oregon's first-in-
the-nation assisted suicide law, Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today
vowed to filibuster the measure if it reaches the Senate floor.
"I have never done this in my career in the Senate, but if [the
bill's sponsor, Senate Majority Whip] Nickles tries to bring this
bill to the floor of the Senate, I'm prepared to go out there and
speak for a long, long, long, long time," Wyden said. Wyden last
year vowed to block the Lethal Drug Abuse Prevention Act,
sponsored by House Judiciary Chairman Hyde and Nickles. But that
measure never reached either floor after a coalition of patient,
physician and other health groups argued it would deter
physicians from providing adequate pain relief for terminally ill
        patients.
