Subject: What are the differences between the various organizations?
Date: Tue, 29 Sep 92 10:12:23 -0400
From:

I think somebody asked how the various cryonics organizations differ
from each other. I would like to add the answer to the sci.cryonics
FAQ list, but I don't have time to write it myself. Any volunteers?

At least the following features of the various organizations could be
compared, although if you have the enthusiasm to write the answer and
I don't, your list of important features makes more of a difference
than mine does. I also list some sketches of answers, which are off
of the top of my head and should be regarded with suspicion.

Size (Alcor is big)

Price (CI is inexpensive. Current numbers for all organizations would
be nice.)

Suspension Technology

Legal status (Alcor has had significant legal battles. ACS and CI
have not.)

Communication style (on the net, and in magazines) (Alcor publishes
detailed descriptions of their suspensions. ACS publishes less
detail. CI? Pointers to CRYOMSG's containing Alcor/ACS flame wars
would be relevant here. Messages 319 and after look promising. You
may want to point out that Darwin no longer works for Alcor.)

Flexibility (ACS lets you choose from several storage organizations.)

Neuro availability (Alcor yes, ACS/Trans Time yes but not advertised,
CI no, but be aware that CI's whole body price is less than Alcor's
neuro price.)

Financial stability (Alcor claims high because they're large; CI
claims high because they have no debt and are located somewhere with
reasonable property values. ACS?)

Treatment of HIV positive suspendees (Alcor treats them the same,
although they use more protective gear. Trans Time (which does the
suspensions for ACS) changes to a less invasive suspension procedure.
What about CI?)

Any volunteers to flesh out these answers or replace them by something
better?

Thanks,
Tim Freeman

[ Message 3, 4, and 5 from July 1988 (over four years ago!) are
Venturist Voice (now Venturist Monthly News) articles describing
Cryonics Institute, ACS, and Alcor. Much has happened since then
and more up-to-date descriptions (including answers to Tim's
questions above) for these and the other cryonics organizations,
will be quite helpful. - KQB ]
