Subject: Funeral article

The Saturday October 9,999 issue of the Globe and Mail had an
interesting article entitled "Funerals to die for". Here's some brief
 quotes:
"The average cost of a funeral in Canada is $5000. Cremations cost
about $900. In the United States, the price of an average funeral is
$7000 (U.S>). Low-income families spend more, dollar for dollar, on
funerals than do middle-class ones. In 1997, 72 per cent of British
Columbians who died opted for cremation, compared to 39 per cent of
 Ontarians.
.....Some people opt to supplant the funeral entirely with a "memorial
gathering," involving songs, poems and people sharing memories.
.....There are only a handful of family-run funeral homes left across
the country; the rest are owned by one of three large, U.S.-based
 chains.
....he describes a conglomerate's crematorium outside Vancouver as
"three huge giant pizza ovens, going 24 hours a day"
