Report of the Meeting of the American Cryonics Society
Board of Governors

July 26, 1992
New Cryonics Building
165 Gibraltar Court, Sunnyvale, CA

Vice President Jim Yount called the meeting to order at 1:30 p.m. and
welcomed members and guests. After discussion of Agenda items the
meeting was adjourned at 5:45 p.m.

Long-Term Storage of Carol

It was reported that Carol, an ACS member who was recently shipped to
Detroit for liquid nitrogen storage, has undergone cooling from dry
ice to liquid nitrogen and is now submerged in LN2.

New Members

It was reported that we recently enrolled two new members, one from
Florida and one from Chicago. John Day suggested we determine how new
members make contact with us so we can better determine effective
recruitment methods. Jim Yount said the fact of our contract
arrangement with the Cryonics Institute was partly responsible for one
of these recruitment.

ACS Emergency Notification

ACS efforts to establish our own emergency notification system were
discussed. To enroll, members purchase Medic Alert bracelets or
necklaces at a cost between $35 to $50, in stainless steel,
silver, or gold plate. There was a discussion as to the wording
to be inscribed on the back of the bracelets. It was suggested to
add that medical personnel were to inject heparin. One of ACS's
two 800 numbers will be assigned as the emergency number and a
24-hour answering service employed. The least costly 24 hour
service we have found runs about $40 per month.

There was discussion on whether ACS should charge members an
additional amount for subscribing to this service or if it should be
covered in their dues. It was decided that presently, at least, there
would be no additional charge to ACS full mem bers but that a charge
would be appropriate to any non-members enrolling. Jim Yount
suggested $50 per year for nonmembers.

LN2 and Ambient Temperature Tissue Storage

Jim Yount discussed his efforts to locate companies who will offer
tissue storage on a contractual basis to ACS members. One perspective
company will charge a flat fee and store tissue samples in two
separate locations. Their service also included culturing white
blood cells (leukocytes) before freezing to help ensure viability.

Trans Time is currently the only company we know of willing to accept
tissue samples from animals with no restrictions concerning suspension
arrangements of the pet owners. The Cryonics Institute will consider
temporary storage of tissue samples from pets provided the owner has a
contract with CI. This would include ACS members who are subscribers
to the ACS-CI co-op plan.

ACS storage of cell samples at ambient temperature, preserved through
common preservation methods such as drying, formaline, and honey or
syrup was discussed. Several Board members commented that any of
these preservation methods would be enhanced by storage in a nitrogen
atmosphere to retard oxidation. Jim Yount will work to develop a
system for ambient-temperature storage and to offer it to our members
in conjunction with low-temperature tissue storage.

Starving Kitty

The question of contributions to the host or hostess for meal and
snack preparation at meetings was discussed. Dick Marsh believes
everyone should pay $10.00 per person. Dick also suggested making a
kitty available for people to put their $10.00 and to use a container
for donations which is obviously for that purpose and is distinct.

Purchase of Copy Machine

Meeting participants were shown the copy machine ACS recently
purchased. The machine is a low cost model which runs slowly but
makes good copies.

Settling Estate of ACS Member

        Executive Session

An ACS member who died several years ago and was placed in suspension
made provisions in her will for the bulk of her estate to go to the
American Cryonics Society who has responsibility for her continued
suspension. Her executor has not made distribution to ACS. Jim
Yount reported that there is a court order over two years old
directing such distribution. An executive session was called to
discuss the matter further and to review a letter received from the
executor on the subject.

After the Board met in executive session it was reported that Jim and
Jerry were to consult further with an attorney hired for this
situation and with a Certified Public Accountant.

Publications

Meeting participants were encouraged to submit material to The
Immortalist. We submit our copy in Word-Perfect format on a floppy
computer disk. We also do a mock-up of our copy layout but leave the
final lay-out to Robert and Mae Ettinger of The Immortalist Society.
Dick Marsh suggested that we do more by-lines to make it easier for
the reader to know the origination of copy. Jim reported that we were
now following that suggestion and using by-lines even for brief news
items.

Upcoming Meetings

The Trans Time Board of Directors meets on the same day and place as
ACS either before or after our meetings. All members and guests
are welcome to the buffets between meetings and to attend Trans
Time Board meetings.
