Subject: Neglect Of Prometheus Project

In msg. #12582, John Grigg asks:

        > Could the Prometheus Project be
neglected due to 21st Century Medicine?

The answer, I believe, is "yes". 21st Century
Medicine (21CM) and the recently split off Critical Care
Research (CCR) have conducted (and will continue to
conduct) important research, the results of which can
be applied to cryonics. Cooperative efforts are under-
way with BioTransport to utilize these research results
to improve the practice of cryonics.

However, both 21CM nor CCR are aiming at
financial success in mainstream medicine, science and
industry. The achievement of suspended animation is
not the primary goal of either company at this time.

Progress towards improved cryonics and the
eventual achievement of suspended animation would,
therefore, be accelerated if there was significant financial
support for research solely related to those goals from
members of the cryonics community.

I believe the best way of raising money from
cryonicists for this type of research is to give them two
options: investment in a for-profit company and/or don-
ations to a non-profit organization. It will also require
a more comprehensive research plan than has yet
been developed.

I expect to become involved in efforts to
raise money from cryonicists specifically for cryonics-
related research sometime next year. Any efforts by
anyone else in the cryonics community towards this
goal would be welcome.
