Casafranca Richard Kars Carina Russell Art Gerstztyn Eric Klien Jerry Searcy Lila Guzma'n Don Laughlin H. Jackson Zinn CHANGE OF LOCATION AND TIME Our next Alcor Laughlin meeting will be held in Las Vegas at 6 PM on Sunday, October 11th. We will be meeting at Ranata's on 4451 E. Sunset Road. To get there from the airport take Russell Road east, then make a right on Mountain Vista, then make a right on Sunset Road. Their number is 435-4000 if you get lost. The time has been moved forward so Don Laughlin will have time to fly in. The location has been moved because 1) the local Las Vegas NBC channel wishes to publicize our meeting 2) the manager of Renata's wishes to attend as well as provide us with free food. SPECIAL GUEST - H. JACKSON ZINN H. Jackson Zinn attended this meeting. He is President of the International Cryonics Foundation, was co-counsel on the Mitchell vs. Roe case that Alcor recently won which made cryonics legal in California, and has considerable experience in cryonics law. At his suggestion, a mailing was done to 170 names that Saul Kent provided. Saul's Life Extension Foundation list was high quality, with three of the six Southern Nevada Alcor members on that list. The mailing was done with fairly professional materials which are available to anyone on request. Unfortunately, the only response to this mailing was someone who returned every sheet of material with a message on each sheet saying that we should look forward to reincarnation. Jackson Zinn suggested that we should call the people who received our mailing to increase our success rate. No one wanted to do this so Jackson Zinn volunteered to do the calling. Eric Klien gave him an initial deposit of $100 to cover the long distance phone bills that would be incurred by this project. Don Laughlin provided him with a Nevada phone book so he would be able to look up these numbers. Jackson also showed a video tape from TransTime about their baboon experiments and other interesting experiments that they have done. He would like to use the material as part of a tape for the public access channels available on cable. His idea is that they would be required to air such a tape frequently as there are no other cryonics tapes competing with it and the courts have forced diversity on public access channels in the past. Eric Klien offered to finance such a project. Don decided that Jackson's suggestion of advertising our meetings on the huge electronic sign outside his casino was impractical. He didn't think many people would even understand what the word "cryonics" meant. EMTS Don decided that an even better idea than training some level one and level two EMTs would be to hire Mercy Ambulance to do the stabilizations for us instead. Mercy covers nearly all of the state, including Laughlin and Las Vegas, and could provide us with paramedics instead of less trained EMTs. He has contacted a friend who knows the CEO at Mercy and we hope to arrange a meeting with Mercy in the near future. Hopefully no later than our November meeting. H. Jackson Zinn should be attending the November meeting and his legal expertise in the area of cryonics would prove to be valuable when we speak with Mercy. Two of Don's employees are now in EMT training, but it is more likely that we will pursue the Mercy Ambulance idea instead. FIRE DEPARTMENT I have followed up with the Acting Paramedic Coordinator at the Clark County Fire Department and he has promised me that he will soon distribute the memo about our bracelets. Unfortunately, it has been over a month since his original promise. I will contact him a third time and it is possible that the mayor will be attending our Las Vegas meeting, and if she attends, I will bring up the matter with her as well. PUBLICITY Our monthly ad in the Las Vegas Review-Journal failed to attract any people to the latest meeting. I have not received evidence of the free ad that the editors at Nevada Senior World promised to run. On the positive side, Sue Tripathi, an anchor on the local NBC station seems to have taken an interest in us. Not only did her news segment with Cindy and Ron Piturka run at least three times during the Olympics, but she has gotten back to us saying she would like to give us even more publicity. As part of this publicity promotion, she will advertise our next meeting on TV. Other publicity ideas are also in the works. POLITICS Katie Kars mentioned that after reading It's Time For A Change she felt like quitting Alcor. She was reassured at the meeting that progress is being made at reforming Alcor. Eric Klien passed around a copy of the article United Way vote expands board from the August 20th issue of the Las Vegas Review-Journal to give everyone an idea of how Alcor may be changed. This article showed how the United Way changed its bylaws to enlarge the board of governors from 30 to 45 members, with at least one third of them being elected as representatives from local United Ways. Similar ideas of regional representation are currently being discussed amongst Alcor members. INFORMATION FROM CURTIS HENDERSON Curtis Henderson provided me with two more video tapes. The first contained The Ice Men Commeth 1967-1968 C.S.N.Y., Alcor NY 1991, Donahue Show, and Beauty and the Beast. The second contained Larry King Show, People are Talking, On Ice, and Cross Fire. These tapes are available at request to interested parties. NEXT MEETING Our next meeting will be on the second Sunday of this month, October 11th, at 6:00 PM at Renata's on 4451 E. Sunset Road. To get there from the airport take Russell Road east (there is no west option), then make a right on Mountain Vista, then make a right on Sunset Road. Their number is (702) 435-4000 if you get lost. For more information, call Eric Klien at (702) 255-1355. Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=1273
