In my earlier post today, I was a little careless, referring to

"closed-end tech or mostly-tech index fund such as QQQ or XLK"

That wasn't precisely right, although the innacuracy has little importance. 
For example, the QQQ is not an index fund, but a unit trust designed to 
closely mimic the performance of the NASDAQ 100. For technical/legal details 
on this and on the XLK and the various index-like "Spiders" such as SPY 
(S&P500 tracking unit trust), see the prospectuses, available from the NASD 
or the AMEX.
