This week in Canberra, I am attending University lectures on simulation, which
are being presented by two American guest lecturers. Today, one of them talked
about haptic perception. An example of a baby was given. It was stated that in
the first six or seven months of life, a baby does not realize that he/she has
arms, hands, legs, feet, lungs, heart etc. In fact the baby only thinks that
he/she is a brain. At six months plus, the baby realizes that he/she owns hands
etc, often at the start of this period, vigorously waving the hands in front of
face to see what he/she owns. This, amongst other things, could be interpreted
as meaning that we should be comfortable in thinking of ourselves as only a
brain (temporarily) as we have done it once before.

I myself have no particular opinions on the Whole Body versus Neuro debate.
