Haven't suggestions been made that they are planning to seek gifts for
cryonics research, or is it a spin off organisation?

Of course investment in a private company is very different from investment
in a publicly quoted company. The main difference is that the company
controls how much you can invest and sales of stock are much more difficult
or maybe even impossible at any price. If the private company ever goes
public, however, usually there is an instant gain to be made if you want it.
