There was another paper in the same issue showing that trehalose is also a very good cryoprotectant. Best part was that they gave the cells the gene to make their own trehalose internally. Soon whole-organismal gene therapy will develop sufficiently to engineer cells in-vivo to make their own cryoprotectants. It really breaks through the problem of getting the cryo. agents through the cell membrane. Its really staggering when you think about it.
