Subject: It's not that easy getting frozen
Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 14:34:43 +0800

I agree with Charles Platt,

Charles Platt in a recent posting argued the precarious situation that
cryonicists have in getting frozen pretty soon after death, and that there
is no such thing as a quick and easy cryonics suspension on a persons death
(only under some [exceptionable conditions] circumstances) .Contrary to some
peoples belief that this is the case.

Certainly from an Australian legal point of view , if anyone was to die
suddenly-from an accident, murder, suicide, car accident, in their own beds
or whatever means of death, the Australian legal system currently demands
that - if there are any circumstances that are considered as out of the
ordinary, there would be autopsies, extended time for the release of the
body, pending outcomes of inquiries, autopsies etc. Particularly if the
family or indeed the community, society the person was living in was
demanding answers.I have had recent experience in that the body wasn't
released until three weeks after the persons death.( non cryonics related -
but never the less ).

As there are so few cryonicists in Australia, we are indeed living (and
dying) on the edge. Having worked in the legal system here can certainly
anticipate medico-legal, ethical problems in this regard. To date this has
never been tested in the Australian legal system. I am certainly aware of
the ' cases' in North America, however, it gives me no comfort to know that
and indeed I foresee that there will be some very difficult cases of
convincing the authorities of the merits of quick cryonic suspension coming
up over the next several years/decades in Australia.

In conclusion the only thing that I can say is that if we (down under) die
quietly in our beds and have no pre-existing illness/malady and of course
depending on the co-operation of our family and friends and hopefully our
relations /friends find a quick and sympathetic magistrate/judge on a given
day----- we will be perfectly cryonically suspended.

long life,

Veronica Sullivan
