Since John has brought up "merging", let me say that the best essay I ever
wrote on identity uses the concept of merging to make its point.  The only
thing that I regret about the essay is that I used "proof" in its title,
and Robert Ettinger has pointed out that the word is a little strong in
this area!

One person told me that he thought very highly of this essay, and since
it's quite germane to the "identity  paradox", as I used to call it, I'll
post it next.
