You might have been Jewish under the Nazis, and found yourself in one of Dr Mengele's experiments, or you could be a Moslem in Bosnia being gang raped until pregnant. All these scenarios could happen now, to you. (Well ok, a male is unlikely to get pregnant however much he is raped, but you get my drift.) The awful thing is you just cease to exist on top of all of it. They are quite reasonable questions and it is sensible to think of them. I remember once Mike Darwin was at the Eastbourne facility and he pointed out that if one were to live forever, the law of averages says that in our present short lives, as compared to infinity, were are unlikely to have suffered anything terribly bad. Statistics suggest, however, that between now and the end of time that each one of us will have an experience far far worse than anything that has happened to us so far. Think of the worst moment of your life. Someday something much, much, very much worse will happen to you! This cause great merriment amongst those of us at the training session. (Well, you know our whacky British sense of humour.) How could we deny such logic? How could we fail to laugh at such a prospect? The alternative was to run screaming from the place and start getting used to the idea of dying. Mike Price added to the moment by pointing out, between giggles, that we may be laughing now, but the words would come back to usat some point in the future, eg when we were having our pain pathways electrified in the Torture Pits of Rigel IV, and we certainly wouldn't be laughing then. I'm afraid you've just got to get used to the idea. Also, the converse is true; think of the greatest joy in your life - there will be times much much more joyful. I hope no one finds this too morbid, but it was funny at the time. You just had to be there. Thank you for letting me share with you, and the next time something awful happens, just look upon it as training for your time on Rigel IV.
