(He also asked whether I am a "Dr." No. I have B.S. and M.S. in physics and M.A. in math, and taught college physics and math for many years.) One possibility is an overdose of barbiturates. There have been reports that barbiturates tend actually to protect the brain against ischemic damage that would otherwise occur. However, I'm not sure about the dosages involved. There are probably other chemical routes too. Another possibility is just to bleed out. The Romans used to sit in a tub of warm water and cut their wrists--said to be quick and virtually painless. I could do that, although some people might have trouble bringing themselves to do it.
