X-Message-Number: 15872 From: "John de Rivaz" <> References: <> Subject: Re: immigration to the USA in retirement Date: Fri, 16 Mar 2001 10:06:39 -0000 I wonder in fact how easy retirement to the USA would be for foreigners interested in cryopreservation. I seem to recall Paul Wakfer's post a while back about how he was turned away at the border for the "crime" of carrying a PC in is car. (It indicated that he may seek work, which was apparently an offence.) I think that you can immigrate to the USA if you have a certain amount of capital, but I am not sure whether you can use it as you like, whether you actually have to pay it to the US government, or more likely use it to buy US government loan stock that pays very low interest. I cannot see any incentive for the US government to allow people in if they just invest the capital on Wall Street or in US real estate - foreigners can do this if they live outside the USA, so the US government can get all the foreign investment it needs without having the inconvenience of foreigners living on its territory. Also what would happen to a foreign national who had enough money got in, and then lost it, possibly because of a requirement for expensive medical care. I would be very surprised if any charitable aid would be given by the US government to foreign nationals. I know foreign nationals do retire to the USA, but if they are not cryonicists and fall upon hard times they can go back home again. But if this were to happen to a cryonicist, then the whole thing would be a complete waste of time and effort. Maybe someone can post a definitive article on the subject. -- Sincerely, John de Rivaz my homepage links to Longevity Report, Fractal Report, music, Inventors' report, an autobio and various other projects: http://www.geocities.com/longevityrpt http://www.autopsychoice.com - should you be able to chose autopsy? ----- Original Message ----- > Message #15865 > From: "BlackShark" <> > in Canada, I am considering moving to the USA when I retire to be nearer one > of the cryonic facilities and increase my chances of a quick freeze.
