Our genes benefit from us wanting to sacrifice ourselves for our children, when their lives and ours are in danger (especially when we are old). So we can expect to want to do that. This calls into question the first conclusion that Ettinger derives: (1) The only case in which self-destruction is reasonable is one in which your future is confidently calculated to include a preponderance of pain over pleasure, or dissatisfaction over satisfaction. It is not that I disagree with the conclusion. I am just not sure about its derivation. Rafi Haftka Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=16897
