A belated CONGRATULATIONS Kat and David. Hey David, you lucky dawg you...I've hugged Kat, saying goodbye at Asilomar, and can vouch you are blessed with a kind and beautiful person for your mate my friend. Kat, you also have in David a kind and generous compliment. All the best perpetually! <snip> > Stem cells soon may be directed > to repair organs and rejuvenate those that are wearing out;" William > Safire. Anyway, I think we need to discuss this matter here and now to > prepare ourselves. Indeed we do need to discuss this but one thing needs particular attention. I know we all are certainly aware of what I'm going to highlight but I think that it must be said and said and said again. The Bush administration, for now, is the enemy of immortality. As far as I know they still mean to stop stem cell research. I do not know if this is only embryonic stem cell research and will not try to stop cloned cell stem cell research where it comes from the patients own cells or not. They are also not friendly towards human cloning. I fear good science will get trashed along with what they fear and misunderstand. Can anyone speak to the issue of whether they are informed enough to differentiate between the finer details of the sciences in question? The scientists involved feel that there still is justification for embryonic stem cell research regardles of the ability to get them from adults. Are they likewise unfriendly toward genetic therapy and engineering? I wouldn't doubt that Jeremy Rifkin probably has his own key to the back door of the White House. To be commended, not all conservative lawmakers are against continued government support of stem cell research. Please see the following article for information on who to support and write supporting letters to and who to oppose. http://abcnews.go.com/sections/politics/DailyNews/Stem_Cells010626.html However, some of Bush's advisor's are more concerned about loss of votes than what is good for the health of humanity. See below: "But one of the president's most trusted aides, political adviser Karl Rove, has warned Bush that giving the green light to federally funded stem-cell research would anger many conservatives, particularly Catholics a key group of swing voters." --from the above linked article. And yet we find that: "According to a new ABCNEWS/Beliefnet poll, Americans support government-funded stem-cell research by a 2-1 margin. Among the supporters are 60 percent of Catholics, the constituency that Rove is said to be concerned with offending." --from the above linked article. Conservative activist Gary Bauer needs to be urged to get *some* science education! He says, "If embryonic tissue at this earliest stage is permissible fodder for laboratory experimentation then why not embryonic tissue derived from tissue a week later, or two week later or six weeks later?" conservative activist Gary Bauer asked in a column appearing today on the Web site Beliefnet. "Human life is either sacred from conception to its natural end or it's not". --from the above linked article. The following organization has grabbed a URL http://www.stemcellresearch.org/ that would probably snare most people doing a search to learn about stem cell research. I fee they are misguided.
