X-Message-Number: 16941 Date: Tue, 10 Jul 2001 05:45:45 -0400 (EDT) From: Charles Platt <> Subject: a "new" book David Johnson very kindly mentions that I have a new book in print. This is news to me, because I haven't seen it; but I assume it must be the hardcover edition of "Loose Canon" (deliberate misspelling), since this is due around now. I should warn CryoNet readers a) A lower cost paperback edition will be out in September, b) only about 5 percent of the book deals with cryonics, and c) the book is a collection of essays which appeared from around 1980 through 1995, in various publications, mostly dealing with science fiction. There's not much new material. More relevantly to CryoNet, I have an article upcoming in Discover magazine (scheduled for the October issue, on sale at the beginning of September) which will describe some of the work initiated by Mike Darwin and Steve Harris at 21st Century Medicine before it spawned Critical Care Research. I hope to write more on similar themes, such as organ vitrification, but must respect the wishes of scientists who usually prefer to have their results published in an academic journal before a popular science writer starts circulating simplified summaries in the mass media.
