X-Message-Number: 17075 From: Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 22:53:49 EDT Subject: Retractions, Corrections, Omissions, etc. Cryonet: Transcription Error Destines Translation Error... In my retyping of the first section of the: GENERAL GUIDE FOR CRYOGENICALLY STORING ANIMAL CELL CULTURES by John A. Ryan I Made a *MAJOR* Typo! It might be hard to imagine an example of a more significant *Single Word Substitution* blunder for more effectively sabotaging the entire meaning of a written sentence, its paragraph and its entire section than the one I managed. (This particular mutation in the reproduction process would have been fatal to the germ line.) Far beyond rendering the sentence merely incomprehensible, the substituted word largely reversed the meaning of the sentence (e.g., "worry little about not being understood, be concerned about being misunderstood"). My sincere apology to the author but more so to all current and future Cryonet readers (i.e., archive readers). The corrected sentence, and its full paragraph for context, is as follows with the Incorrect word (i.e., "neither") replaced by the correct word (i.e., "rather"). The capitalization is for both identification and emphasis: QUOTE (accurately this time): "However, when the cooling rate is slow enough to prevent intracellular ice formation, but fast enough to avoid serious dehydration effects, cells may be able to survive the freezing and thawing process. This survival zone or window is readily observed in many bacterial and other prokaryotes, but for most eukaryotic cells it is nonexistent or very difficult to find without using cryoprotective agents. These agents have little effect on the damage caused by fast freezing (intercellular ice crystal formation), but *RATHER* prevent or lessen the damage caused by slow freezing (dehydration and shrinkage) (8)." UNQUOTE I will reference this correction in the next section of "The Guide" in a following Cryonet post. Error number two (paling by comparison) is found in yesterday's post of mine titled "Look Ma, No Hands, No Fido, No Fred, No Fridge..." where the final sentence of the second paragraph should have read as follows: "The keys are in the ignition and the *DETRROIT* map is on the dash!" (i.e., as in Clinton Township, Michigan--CI Headquarters. Those of other cryonics persuasions please substitute City as appropriate). For any and all additional but unaddressed past, current (e.g., in this post) and future errors and omissions, kindly go by want I mean and not what I print. Thanks. Regards, David C. Johnson "Better to remain quiet and be thought a fool that to speak up and remove all doubt." Naaa, people need to know these things.
