Subject: Tooth Protection - Perio Reduction

Regarding this recent discussion, I thought I would mention that I have had
excellent success in abating beginning periodonitis by the use of
grapefruit seed extract. This product is marketed under the names GSE and
Citricidal, by NutriBiotic of Lakeport CA, and is sold at retail by
VitaminShoppe (I am not meaning to promote any companies over any others,
but these are the only sources I know of). I have applied drops of it
under the gumline using a toothpick. For regular maintenance, I stir 14
drops into 300 ml of water and run it through a WaterPik (be sure to rinse
the machine out afterwards by running plain hot water through; the
glycerine base of the GSE could clog it up).

Listerine used to work pretty well for me, but not so well in recent years;
perhaps the bacteria have mutated.

More serious cases of periodonitis usually accompanied by plaque buildup
under the gums would need removal treatment by a professional before any
kind of topical treatment would be of much value.

Someone mentioned the use of antibiotics presumably taken by swallowing;
these are delivered by the bloodstream to the infected areas, so are of
some use in reducing the gum swelling, but do not reach the colonies of
bacteria on the surfaces of the teeth.

As a final note, NutriBiotic also makes an excellent toothpaste containing GSE.
