X-Message-Number: 17442 From: Date: Sun, 2 Sep 2001 09:10:15 EDT Subject: Pichugin's lab Dr. Yuri Pichugin has now been in Michigan for two months, and although we have obtained a building for his research laboratory--within walking distance of the main CI facility--and have secured most of the equipment he needs, the lab itself required considerable modification, which has not yet been completed but should be soon. Needless to say, the research agenda is heavily loaded, the main problem being prioritization among the many inviting lines of work. Our first priority is to test and evaluate some of the relatively quick and simple improvements in procedure that Dr. Pichugin has suggested. We intend to stick to our policy of making changes only after direct evaluation, which now will be both by independent agencies and by Dr. Pichugin's own methods. On a personal note, Yuri likes our area of Michigan better than Los Angeles. He has a nice apartment in a large apartment complex within walking distance of the facilities. There is lots of greenery and park-like areas, squirrels and rabbits. He has a bicycle and is learning to drive a car. (Speaking of animals, Connie Ettinger planted large expanses of impatiens this year, only to see most of them eaten by deer--yes, wild deer in Franklin, a suburb of Detroit.) Everything takes longer than expected, and costs more than expected, as expected. But we are moving forward, and the pace should quicken.
