X-Message-Number: 17498 Date: Mon, 10 Sep 2001 08:33:40 -0400 (EDT) From: Charles Platt <> Subject: Alcor AGM At the Alcor AGM on Sunday, Saul Kent and Carlos Mondragon were elected to the Alcor board, filling vacancies that were created by the resignation of Fred Chamberlain and Gary Meade. Two others had made it known that they were available as candidates: Steve Harris MD of Critical Care Research, and Michael West, the founder of Advanced Cell Technology. However, neither of them received any nominations. (Nominations can only come from existing directors). They were subsequently proposed and appointed as advisors to the Alcor board. The meeting was very capably run by Dr. Jerry Lemler, who provided a list of preliminary actions which he will take as Alcor's new president. Among those actions will be discontinuation of the totally automated phone system at Alcor, which has made it virtually impossible for new callers to reach a human being. In the future, a real person will answer the phone during office hours. Dr. Lemler also stated that the Alcor Phoenix, or some version of it, will be revived by a collaboration of myself with Hugh Hixon. I am rejoining Alcor, and will be glad of the opportunity to produce a monthly cryonics newsletter that will provide space for all important and relevant cryonics news. In addition, I have been told that the column which I used to write for Alcor's quarterly magazine (formerly CRYONICS magazine) will be reinstated. Please note that the above is just a brief personal report based on my attendance at the meeting; it is not in any sense an official version and has not been fact-checked by Alcor, although I believe it is correct. There were many other interesting items at the Alcor AGM (which was entirely open to the public), but I lack the time to go into them in any detail right now. --Charles Platt Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=17498
