Hi all,

Just a brief note to let you all know I'm back on the list and back in the U.S.
after having lived in Israel for the past 7 years.

How sadly ironic that what I thought I was escaping in Israel has followed me
out here. And that I have the dubious distinction of personally knowing victims
on both sides of the Atlantic. How sad also that over the past seven years I
have become somewhat innured to the exploits of animals ("human" is too nice a
word) intent on causing as much harm, blooshed and terror as possible. This
isn't to say that what happened on 9/11 didn't shock me to the core. It is to
say that the idea someone would "rise" to such villany did not.

Imagine if EVERY week a few hundred Americans died as a result of terrorism.
That, in terms of percentages, is what life was like (and continues to be like)
in Israel. At first my western educated mind simply couldn't understand what
would possess someone to blow themselves up, taking, among others, mothers
holding infants along with them. After awhile I no longer asked and simply
accepted the grim reality that I could never and would never understand a hatred
that deep. Further, I began to find myself moving from my liberal left leaning
upbringing to a more conservative right-leaning approach - specifically with
regards to dealing with terrorism. While the world was shocked that the Israeli
government began to actively assasinate terrorist suspects and planners I, for
one was not. That's what it had come down to and that, apparently is what it
will come down to in dealing with Bin laden and his ilk. I sincerely doubt many
of his cohorts will be shipped back to America to stand trial. More than likely
they will be terminated in the name of war, their bodies left to decompose in
the dirt and dust from which they hatched their misery on the world.

Perhaps knowing I plan on being cryonically preserved will make the present
reality more palatable (providing, of course, I make it body intact). But I
would caution that we as cryonocists should not sit on our duffs and wait it out
but rather do everything we can to make the world we live in NOW as condusive
as possible to the future we all dream about waking up in to.

Dani Kollin
