X-Message-Number: 1777 Date: 20 Feb 93 02:53:36 EST From: Clarissa Wells <> Subject: CRYONICS Member Exclusion To: I sent a letter to "Cryonet" recently, pointing out the action of three Alcor board members who voted to give themselves the power to exclude any ex-member of their choice. My letter prompted a couple of people to write and tell me the names of the three board members in question. I understand that the meeting where the vote took place was open to the public. Therefore I see no reason why the three members should not be named here. They were (according to my correspondents) Keith Henson, David Pizer, and Carlos Mondraggon. In addition, I am told that Hugh Hixon abstained from voting. I realize I am relatively new to this field, and I don't wish to acquire a reputation for stirring up trouble. But I am genuinely puzzled. Doesn't anyone worry that three Alcor board members showed themselves willing to cut people off from a chance at future life, arbitrarily and in a manner which would allow the excluded person no recourse? If these three men are willing to deprive a person of the chance for life in such a cavalier fashion, what are they doing running an organization that REVERES life? Of course, this matter does not affect most Alcor members directly. It is a general principle, however, that the actions of those in power which affect some other minority today may well affect one's own minority tomorrow. Therefore, it would seem to me that for reasons of self-interest alone, the Alcor membership should respond in some way to this vote by Mr. Henson, Mr. Pizer, and Mr. Mondraggon.
