They seem to show up when it looks as if we'll soon be able to do something we've never done before. The objections to using anesthetic (PARTICULARLY in childbirth) came up when people discovered in two centuries ago that some drugs helped avoid pain. So long as there are people who worry too much about such changes they will become bioethicists and worry publicly and in writing. Incidentally, for those who may not have noticed, SCIENCE now has a special section on its net site where issues about AGING get discussed. It's still a bit primitive: lots of attention to Alzheimer's, for instance. It will be interesting to see what happens here.
