Kent, would you rather be dead than male? If the answer is "no", sign up now. When your ship is sinking, you get on the lifeboat. Arguing about which direction to sail is a matter for discussion after you're out of the water. If the answer is "yes", and you hate being male enough to die rather than continue to be one, I will suggest that changing genders may not have the effect you desire. > > and all this talk of not needing money, i have heard about the concept, but doesn't money make this world what it is, and although there are a great many people making a difference in lieu of money, i can't see this change happening any time soon. i think i would have to be frozen for a very long time to see that happen. Money makes the world what it is, yes. I think the world will be very different when nanotechnology makes it possible to manufacture virtually anything from raw atoms. This may or may not mean there is no money, but its significance will be much changed when it is not *needed* for food, clothing, or shelter. > > what is the general consensus, do we have a better change of a successful re-animation through vitrification, or nitrogen freezing, there has not been much conversation along those lines? Opinions vary. I think people who are vitrified will be reanimated sooner, as there will be less damage to repair, but nanotechnology and computing power will allow recovery of frozen patients as well. I expect suspension technology to improve; sign up rather than wait for it. You can get a transfer once you have a ticket (i.e. change organizations), and you can direct your organization to use the best technology available to them when you need it. > > i cant help but thinking that i am alone in this pursuit as far as my family goes. as mentioned, i am 40 and of good health so with the exception of any unplanned occurrences i hopefully have a long way to go before i die, but do not see my wife joining me and my kids are to young to understand, maybe in this future this will change. Question to those who have seen Vanilla Sky: if family members see it, will they be more favorably inclined towards your being cryonically suspended, less favorably inclined, or won't it make any difference? > > i would like to make an initial start on this, or at least begin to understand how to map this out. what did you mean when you said that CI only promises to consider any written requests of the patient, subject to our policies at the time in regards to my question of having my current "self, thoughts and memories" re-animated into a female body? Do they also get to decide _which_ female body? Would you rather lie around in stasis for the hundred years it may take to perfect that technology, or take that hundred years trying out different bodies in what will surely be a mature virtual reality by that time? > > thankyou all for taking the time to respond to me and my questions, you have made me feel warm and welcome. i appreciate the effort it takes to answer the same old questions to the latest new guy. I hope I haven't seemed too harsh. I feel concerned and caring. I know a number of transsexuals and know that they go through quite a bit of psychological evaluation and counseling, and wonder if the obsession with changing genders warrants looking into in its own right. I definitely want to see what being a man is like, but I'll start with my Mark 0 body as the easiest case, and try others in VR or when gender change has become as easy as changing clothes (or maybe hair color) is now. I also expect psychology to have improved greatly by then -- the first thing I'll want to change is my self-esteem, closely followed by my fear of creepy-crawly things. *Please* don't die because you want to live as a woman! -- May you live long and prosper, Kennita -- Kennita Watson | Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery; | None but ourselves can free our minds. http://www.kennita.com | -- Bob Marley, "Redemption Song" Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=18284
