X-Message-Number: 18422 From: "Mark Plus" <> Subject: yet another pro-immortalism book? Date: Sat, 26 Jan 2002 22:54:02 -0800 This looks interesting: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0231116721/ Apparently it's a translation of a book by Mark Benecke that has already appeared in German: http://www.uni-koeln.de/~akr05/traum.html My German is a little rusty, but I believe the sentence, "Bis zum Jahr 2050 werden wir gen gend Kenntnisse haben, um biologisch unsterblich zu sein", means something to the effect that by the year 2050, we shall have enough knowledge to become biologically immortal. I'd have to struggle through the rest of the page to determine what Benecke thinks about this. Even if he thinks it's bad, at least it's encouraging for our side to see more open acknowledgement of the possibility, especially if Benecke has legitimate scientific credentials. I do find it ironic that the kinds of people who worry about immortality causing social stagnation want to stop progress any way.
