        Is this some kind of whole life policy?  I think you should 
trash it and buy level term insurance.  My wife (a 32 year-old Canadian) 
pays $33 per month for a $150,000 policy.  These premiums remain 
constant until age 70 (as I recall) at which point the policy is fully 
paid up.

[ Brian, I have one small nitpick.  I think that in the USA, your
  wife's policy would be called "Universal Life" rather than
  "Level Term".  I am calling attention to this distinction because
  the name "Level Term" sounds a lot like "Term Life", which is
  considerably different.  A "Term Life" policy never accumulates
  any cash value; your coverage stops when your payments stop and
  the payments get higher as you get older.
