If we can modify ourselves so as to make ourselves immortal, there is no special reason why we cannot modify ourselves so as to increase our abilities in whatever direction is required. The argument that "because we are biological we are therefore of a fixed design" is quite false. Not only that, but looking around me I see many machines which show no ability to modify themselves at all --- far less ability than we human beings, or even a cat, will demonstrate. If we are to get into argument about upgrades, then it's presently machines that have the real problem. And we "upgrade" our machines by either selling or throwing away the old one --- hardly a way to preserve identity (if it had any. And I include present computers in this judgement, too). Just a comment about an idea floating about on Cryonet. Best wishes and long long life for all, Thomas Donaldson Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=19894
