Waist Measurement Reveals Heart Risk

By Cathryn Conroy,

If you dare, measure your waist. The New York Obesity Research Center
has determined that your waist circumference is a more accurate
measurement than your body mass index (BMI) in determining if you will
have a heart attack or stroke. So go on. Get out the tape measure.
Here are the magic numbers Men: Those with 35-inch waists should
maintain their weight, while those with waists that measure 39 inches or
more should lose weight to minimize their risk of heart attack and
stroke. Women: Those with 33-inch waists should maintain their weight,
while those with waists that measure 37 inches or more should lose
weight to minimize their risk of heart attack and stroke.

Use this cool tool to calculate your risk of having a heart attack over
the next 10 years.

Reporting in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the researchers
came up with these waist measurements by comparing the heart disease
risk factors with waist sizes and BMIs in more than 9,000 middle-aged
white men and women. Waist sizes more accurately predicted the risk of
heart attacks, which confirmed previous studies that have indicated that
a lot of fat in the abdominal area increases the risk of heart disease.
And lest you doubt the conclusions, the researchers insist that the
results apply to almost ALL white adults ages 20 to 90. Research
directed specifically to other races should also be conducted, they
said.

In Hollywood's battle of the bulge, these five diets rule. Do they add
up? Here's the skinny!

So much for the, "Fat is beautiful--Stop dictating to us a skinny body
image as normal--You can be overweight and fit", fat activist position.
Of course most people instinctually know the fat activist position is
untenable.
