Is anyone else bothered by the fact that Alcor is pretty much a black
box these days when it comes to news? Its magazine lately has been
singularly uninformative about the real problems facing cryonics. I've
also heard from a third-hand source that an employee recently got
fired, but I haven't heard why, and whether the employee's actions
threatened the patients or the organization somehow.

And yes, it appears to me that Alcor has gone back to the same level of 
obscurity it had before the "This Week At Alcor" postings began.  Of course 
that was overkill, but it was better than no information at all.
