I recently read an article which may point to a useful new drug for
preventing damage in the time between death and perfusion. Dr Peter Lewis at
UK company Bio-T at Oxford have developed a drug BB-882 which affects
Platelet Activation Factor which stops the 'shock' reaction which starts when
platelets bind to healthy cells. This is, I guess, the same reaction that
sets in after 'real' death causing the damage of ischemia. BB-882 has already
been given to healthy people without side effects, and is now going into
formal tests.
