With regard to cryonics and science fiction: Actually, one element of
cryonics has definitely made it into the "shared background" of
SF. The concept of the starship crew entering "suspended animation,"
usually through a combination of drugs and freezing, is so common that
it no longer requires explanation. SF readers easily accept the idea that
starship crews can survive tens or hundreds of years in this state,
recovering to full effectiveness within a fairly brief time. Yet we don't
see any depiction of this technology being used for suspension as we
conceive of it, either as an ambulance ride to the future or for simple
tourism.

Still, the stories are there. Thanks for the pointers. I'll start making
notes as I encounter things.

Steve, my e-mail address is I'll be interested in
seeing whatever you come up with.
