Kudos to Brian Wowk for his continued work. Re "honeycomb" - Certainly you are right about the cross-section of the (average) human body as seen from above - it's not a circle. However, neither is it a rectangle; it's an oval, which is not efficiently approximated by a rectangle. You still get the best packing efficiency with six-sided cells - they just have to be lengthened on one direction. This may become moot considering your proposal to create ad-hoc cells by adding or removing ballast cans at need. Remember, you'll need to find or design a can that stacks tightly, so patients won't be crushed and shattered by falling cans in case of catastrophe. And you'll need to test the design with frozen cans, to make sure that there is no significant degree of freezing-induced bulging.
