As far as I understand, blood vessels without liquid in them would 

collapse due to surface tension. To avoid this air can be substituted 

by any non-toxic water-solving liquid - alcohols, DMSO etc. In fact, 

there is no need to change from blood-substituting liquid to something 

other, we can just steadily change its composition lowering water 

fraction and raising water-solving ones.
