X-Message-Number: 22061 Date: Mon, 23 Jun 2003 08:27:39 -0400 From: Thomas Donaldson <> Subject: CryoNet #22049 - #22060 Well, fellows (and maidens etc): Since the very tone of David Stodolsky's piece discussing what Steve Bridge has said recently suggest that he wouldn't listen to my comments, this is more general. Just like us, David Stodolsky is an animal and motivated fundamentally by the drives of an animal (I mean animal in a totally nonpejorative sense). Seen from this perspective David Stodolsky brings up ideas based on some kind of ideal conduct of people. As a simple instance, when we come down to basics, political organization and economic organization will inevitably affect one another, enough that it sometimes happens that the distinction becomes completely false: 2 conflicting ideas constructed of air alone, with similar traits to those of clouds. I would say the same of libertarianism and socialism. I do not know how his beliefs support David Stodolsky's interests, and as I explained before, such support need not be direct and certainly will be complex. We do all share an interest in avoiding death, and found that forming cryonics groups would help promote that interest. Yes, the self-interest in cryonics shows itself in a complex way, but it's still there. (As HUMAN animals, we can show much more complex forms of altruism). But most of all, it helps to keep in mind that we are highly intelligent animals, and our beliefs and behavior stem from that simple fact. Best wishes and long long life for all, Thomas Donaldson Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=22061
