The Integral Fast Reactor is an unfinished design for a new type of
nuclear reactor.  Their home page is here:

This page claims it's two orders of magnitude more efficient than
existing designs:

I suppose the big question is whether there would be enough time
between the perception of a real petroleum crisis and the ability to
bring something like this online.  Even if fission is only good for a
few decades before running out of fuel, that might be enough to time
to get us to fusion or nanotech.  The latter citation claims IFR's
would be good for "thousands of years".
