A Short Story or Proof that God Exists
By: David Pizer

If anything has to be regulated in the United States, then something like
cryonics will have to be regulated. We are doing things that might put an end
to death someday. It is probably the case that frozen people are alive - the
bureaucrats just don't realize that yet. The ramifications of cryonics are just
too large and plentyfull for bureaucrats to ignore cryonics. The only reason
more attention is not focused on us yet, is the small size of the cryonics
movement. That will change as we grow.

As bureaucrats, and all electd officials, come to feel compelled to pay more
attention to us, there inevitably will be times when the bureaucrats will be
"baited" by reporters to try to say something "juicy" about cryonics or certain
cryonics organizations. I would like to tell you the story of the elected
official who did not take the bait.

In the early 90s when Alcor first moved to Scottsdale, there was a lot of media
attention about Alcor since we were coming out of the Dora Kent affair. The
bureaucrates in California were blasting us at every chance. A news reporter
approached a Scottsdale Councilwoman and tried to bait her. He asked her
something like: "What do you think about this cryonics company coming to
Scottsdale bringing frozen bodies?" I knew this woman did not have any personal
interest in cryonics for herself. I wondered if she would try to advance her
career by saying something negative about Alcor.

Councilwoman, Mary Manross, replied solemnly something like: "Scottsdale has
one of the best city hospitals in the nation, Scottsdale Memorial; And, if they
can't help you we have the world-famous Mayo Clinic; And if they can't help
you, we now have Alcor."

Soon after, Ms. Manross became the mayor.
