The Chinese definitely do value their ancestors and elders, which is a 
good thing.  I think it is a value that western culture used to have, 
but which has been declining over the past 50-100 years.

Also, my girlfriend, who is Chinese, has told me that many Chinese 
people would not find it strange to desire longevity or immortality.  
Apparently, it is something that many powerful people in history have 
tried to achieve.  And although some of them certainly tried grotesque 
means (sacrificing virgins and whatnot), I do no think the goal is 
viewed negatively.
