X-Message-Number: 23299 From: Date: Thu, 22 Jan 2004 12:18:00 EST Subject: animal brains Dr. Havelock asked about Suda's and related work updates. A few years ago, when he was still in the Ukraine, Dr. Yuri Pichugin and colleagues worked with rabbit brain pieces on commission for CI, using solutions similar to CI's, and obtained coordinated electrical activity in networks of neurons after rewarming from liquid nitrogen. I believe this goes beyond Suda's work and is still the most advanced of its kind. A report was published in The Immortalist, as I recall. Dr. Pichugin's recent work for CI has been mostly with rats, not mice, and also sheep heads obtained from a slaughter house. Other animals are being considered, but not dogs or cats, for proposed work later this year in Russia. Human cadavers are also expected to be used. A Russian group is expected to help with the expense. Dr. Pichugin's recent work has resulted in significant advances in the areas of vitrification and reduction of toxicity (per the K/Na criterion). But we also want full evaluation with microscopy and electrophysiology. We hope to be ready for a major change in procedures later this year.
