A radio play that purports to concern cryonics was broadcast on Friday 6th
February 2004, and can be streamed from the web on
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/arts/ram/afternoonplay_fri.ram
There is a little text if you scroll down

If you are reading this on an archive, please note that these links are
probably changed on 13th February 2004 and the play will then be
unavailable.

Dennis Ockerby on Ice

By Debbie Oates

Dennis Ockerby is going into the deep freeze, but will his wife Viv be there
when he thaws?

The play is a mixture of the book "If we could keep a severed head alive" by
Chet Fleming and Alcor's vitrified neuropreservation. The premise is that
Ockerby has been "discorporated" as per the book (had his body cut off and
is supported by surgical machinery), and is awaiting vitrification. The
cryonics people are awaiting a change in medical protocols so that
vitrification can be performed n whilst he is still alive. Most of the
action is discussion between Ockerby and his wife. There are a few points
that we all know that are covered, ie where does the soul go, what about the
partner left, can they have relationships and so on. The relationships thing
is a big part of the play, and of course it isn't really a cryonics issue.
Many married non-cryonics people who are widowed will remain faithful to a
dead partner. The point wasn't raised about a person possibly throwing the
rest of what life they had away if cryonics doesn't work and they are
annihilated.

Chrissie feels that the play was badly done, and I am afraid that all
CryoNet readers will be disappointed in the ending, which is as crass as the
ending to Tuck Everlasting.
