Note to the board and Kevin Brown re "Ragnar"

Kevin Brown sent the "Ragnar" email headers to Hugh and Hugh asked me
to take a look at these fraudulent email postings to Cryonet which
seemed to be coming from Alcor. While the origin headers were faked,
the origin machine was included in the messages. I tracked down the
people in charge of the machine from which these message originated at
Stanford, and they tried to find out what had happened.

When they looked, the system log on that machine had been deleted.

They think there may be an innocent and unrelated reason as to why the
log was gone. In theory deleting it requires system (root)
privileges, which, if it were done by an outsider, would be evidence
of a very serious security breach. And, the destruction of a system
log invokes major federal criminal computer laws.

Unfortunately, without the log they could not help.

At least we know these postings did not originate from Portal and
Alcor's password on Portal was not compromised for these postings.

Keith
