I never met Robert Nelson and cannot speculate knowledgeably on his specific motivations. In general, however, I want to point out that the two choices above are not mutally exclusive. Much of human progress comes from people saying, "Here is something that people want, that would benefit people, and that I can make a lot of money by providing." Some of those people are more successful than others, some are more honest than others. It is not clear than society has benefitted much more from the actions of the honest than from the actions of the succesful but dishonest, as long as they had a useful product. Whatever the level of Nelson's honesty, it is certain that he wasn't very competent or successful. And it is likely that the results of his incompetence and/or dishonesty did NOT benefit society or cryonics -- except perhaps by showing us all a shining example of what not to do.
