I never met Robert Nelson and cannot speculate knowledgeably on his specific 
motivations.  In general, however, I want to point out that the two choices 
above are not mutally exclusive.  Much of human progress comes from people 
saying, "Here is something that people want, that would benefit people, and that
I can make a lot of money by providing."


Some of those people are more successful than others, some are more honest than 
others.  It is not clear than society has benefitted much more from the actions 
of the honest than from the actions of the succesful but dishonest, as long as 
they had a useful product.


Whatever the level of Nelson's honesty, it is certain that he wasn't very 
competent or successful.  And it is likely that the results of his incompetence 
and/or dishonesty did NOT benefit society or cryonics -- except perhaps by 
showing us all a shining example of what not to do.
