I find that a few inches is best with these particular models. At this 
distance they do come in quite clear. They do require the push of a 
button but are still voice activated. Why the two toegther I'm not sure 
but if they were only voice activated with no need to push a button 
they'd be noisy picking up every sound around one. There is a problem of 
the mic picking up wind noise in a stiff breeze but that can be shielded 
by the user that's in such a wind.

These are rather simple and unfortunately have no adjustment to 
sensitivity of the voice activation. I'll report when/if I get a notice 
from the FCC about needing a license. A HAM radio operator friend of 
mine said that it was like having a CB. Everyone using such a CB radio 
is required to have a Citizen's Band Radio Operator's license but few 
ever comply... a sort of on your honor system.
